Backpacking is a great way to spend some time with friends and family and to truly appreciate the majesty of the outdoors. There’s something different about the way you feel when you’re out in nature. Some laugh and mock others about hiking 15 miles just to sleep on the cold hard ground. These people just don’t realize what they’re missing out on.
There are a few things that must be remembered when you are preparing for your trip. One of the most important things is some sort of water filtration device. Water is one of the most important things your body needs. Backpacking can be strenuous and your body needs that extra liquid. Boiling your water is an option but filtering it out of the closest stream is much easier and you don’t have to wait for the water to cool down.
A first aid kit is probably second on the list. This is something we hope we never have to use but our glad we had it when we need it. When you are out in the mountains, anything could happen to you. There are too many variables to try and predict what is going to happen. Sticks and rocks appear from nowhere and really tear up the legs. Knives constantly slip causing major cuts in the hands and fingers. Fishing hooks accidentally forced into fingers by uncontrollable forces. It’s always worth it to be prepared.
Sleeping conditions is also an important matter. This may take a little research on your end. Whether you have a tent or a tarp it’s important to know what the weather will be like and what the temperature is going to be. I have been backpacking in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming and in the Uinta’s in Utah. I have personally been snowed on in both locations in the middle of summer. Come prepared to stay warm. The weather in these particular locations can change in a heartbeat and really put a damper on things in a hurry.
The next thing I highly recommend is that you purchase (if you don’t already have any), a quality pair of hiking boots or shoes. If you have uncomfortable hiking boots or shoes you will hate the next couple of days on your trip. Make sure your boots or shoes are broken in before you start your journey. Wearing inadequate shoes can cause major blistering making every step a living hell. This is no way to spend a weekend vacation with the family. There are plenty of quality brands out there like Hi-Tec Boots that can help provide you with what your situation may be. You can find a great selection of Men’s Hiking boots on the web as well.
There are more things that you will need to take on your trip. I just wanted to mention some of the most important ones. But don’t forget about a mess kit, extra pairs of socks, toilet paper since leaves aren’t the ideal option and what kind of food you will take. Enjoy the trip and the beauty that will surround you.
