History of Sneakers
Do you sometimes wonder why sneakers are simply called sneakers? And considering all the big shoe companies competing for your shoe purchase, do you ever wonder who invented the first sneaker pair?
The very first rubber soled shoes, which at the time were called plimsolls, were made in the United States and date back to the late 1800s. The U.S. Rubber Company received the first license to do manufacture shoes using a process called vulcanization, which is a necessary step in producing sturdier rubber shoes.
Under 30 different brand names were manufactured by this company until 1916, when the U.S. Rubber Company decided to consolidate. From then on, only one brand name was used. While the initial plan was to use "peds", which is latin for foot, in the end the decision was made to name the shoes "Keds".
The brand name was initially marketed as canvas top "sneakers". Not surprisingly, an advertising agent named Henry Nelson McKinney actually came up with the term "sneakers". His reasoning was that the rubber soles of the shoes made no sound, so it would be easy to "sneak like a thief".
Keds reached a popularity peak among women in the 1980s. At the time it slouch socks, warmers, and tights were all in fashion. However, the popularity of Keds died down in the 1990s mainly due to competition from other companies.
Partly due to an effective advertising campaign that incorporates famous Hollywood celebrities like Mischa Barton and The Veronicas, the Keds brand is yet again being resurrected. It is perhaps not surprising that celebrities are helping make this particular footwear brand popular yet again among women.
The history of sneakers is in other words not particularly long, and Henry Nelson McKinney probably did not imagine how popular they would eventually become.
